Artist in Residence

ArtsEkta welcomes Priyanka Purohit from Mumbai in India for a 2 week long residency with our South Asian Dance Academy trainees.

In the weeks leading up to the Mela, dance trainees from ArtsEkta’s South Asian Dance Academy are participating in an intensive artist in residence programme led by cheorgrapher Priyanka Purohit from Mumbai in India.

Priyanka Purohit is assistant to the legendary Bollywood cheorgrapher Pratap Shetty, whose vibrant energy has contributed to a range of Indian films including Silsiley, Detective Nani, Dil Hi Dil Mein, Love in Nepal and Bardash.  Priyanka has been pursuing Kathak dancing for 16 years and has successfully completed ‘Visharad’ from Gandharva Institute, a renowned institute of India, under the able guidance of Guri Shri Vasantrao Ghatge. She has also developed skills in Indian Folk Dance for 5 years and has completed 5 levels at the Surzhankaar Academy in Mumbai. 

During her two week residency, Priyanka will be developing a new semi-classical cheorgraphy for the South Asian Dance Academy, which will be showcased on the World Stage at the Belfast Mela 2011. She will also be delivering workshops to community and youth groups across Belfast teaching Bollywood freestyle and Bhangra styles.
